The“Vasco Nuñez de Balboa” Award

back to the Kuna Yala homepage

This official document explains an honor that was bestowed upon Marvel Iglesias in 1983 only a short time before she passed away in 1984. The“Vasco Nuñez de Balboa” Award is one of the highest national medals of honor in Panamá. She received this award because of her service among the Kuna people. Several specific reasons were given as an explanation as to why she deserved this honor. She began a small school which motivated the opening of other schools on the islands. She was concerned about public health, so she educated the people to use medicines that combated sicknesses, lowered infant mortality rates, helped prevent death during delivery, and decreased malnutrition. The Kuna people hold her in high esteem for all the work that she did among them. She served as a liaison between the Kuna Indians and the Republic of Panamá as well as other missionaries who continue to work with the Kuna in the Comarca Kuna Yala.
